Three Passes Trek – Overview
The Three Passes Trek is a challenging circuit trek offering spectacular views of the highest mountains on earth. As the name suggests, this trek involves crossing three passes. And the ascent to and descent from the passes and the altitude involved can be challenging. Furthermore, some sections are icy and require navigating over loose rock. However, no technical climbing skills are required. While the Three Passes Trek is similar to the Ultimate Everest Trek but with the added crossing of the Kongma La pass. This is the hardest of the three passes.
The Three Passes trek is a comprehensive Everest region trek that allows you to see more of everything in the Khumbu: spectacular mountain vistas, Sherpa culture, high passes, and rustic villages. This is not possible on the standard Everest Base Camp trek.
The Trek
The Everest Three Passes trek begins with a flight to Lukla. Trek up to the Imja Valley from where you face your first and, perhaps, the hardest challenge: the crossing of the Kongma La pass (5,535m /18,159ft) to Lobuche. Continue to the Everest Base Camp and climb Kalapathar for an up-close view of the south face of Everest. Traverse over the Cho La pass (5,420m/17,782ft) to the Gokyo valley near the Ngozumpa Glacier. At Gokyo, you will hike to the summit of Gokyo Ri – a vantage point to view four mountains over 8,000 meters: Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu and Makalu. Alternatively, you may choose to hike to the 5th lakes to get a closer view of Cho Oyu. Thereafter, cross the Renjo La pass (5,465m /17,930ft), the best view point for mountain vistas, to reach Thame, home of several famous Sherpa mountaineers. Finally, descend to Lukla via Khumjung.

WHY TREK THE EVEREST THREE PASSES TREK IN SMALL PRIVATE GROUPS (1 – 8 people)?
“Being only two people in the group was a massive advantage we had — it was easier to get helicopters with a smaller group, easier to change where we’d stay on a given day, easier to ask to push further when we felt good, etc. In fact, because of this flexibility, we beat many big groups to EBC, who took many hours longer than us because they had to wait for stragglers, and they ended up missing the views because the clouds had already come in. Basically this helped us get in/out of Lukla more easily, move faster, and adapt the schedule to the changing weather.”

WHY TREK WITH US?
“When looking for a trekking service provider, don’t scrimp. You don’t want the fastest or the cheapest. You want a service that will take a small group safely, giving the time required to safely ascend and willing to be flexible to adjust to your needs. I needed an extra day to get to altitude. If I had been with a large discount guide service, I would have been on my own or worse, headed home like several people I met. Crystal Mountain’s Guides adjusted our trek to accommodate my body’s needs and I ultimately had that peak experience without jeopardizing my health. Many services just do the usual routes but CM’s guides know just about any route you’re ready to take on. I trust these guys with my life.”

“A first rate outfit. As a solo traveller from Australia doing the Three Passes Trek, CMT was fantastic to deal with. Prompt and informative responses to my inquiries. Great support in sorting out flights from Kathmandu to Lukla, plus a fantastic porter/guide who made all the difference in ensuring i completed the trek. There is a reason why they have been in business nearly 30 years – they are very good!”

OPTIONS FOR TREKS IN THE EVEREST REGION
If you prefer a less strenuous trek, check out our Everest Base Camp Trek or the Ultimate Everest Trek. The latter involves crossing the Cho La pass (Everest Base Camp to Gokyo lake) and the Renjo La pass (Gokyo lake to Thame) but not the challenging Kongmala pass. We are also happy to customize the trek for you. Read about Jwalant’s Everest Three Passes trek experience.

MAP OF EVEREST TREK

The yellow line shows the trail for the Everest Base Camp Trek. The Everest Base Camp trek basically follows the same trail to EBC and back. Similarly, the red line shows the trail for the Ultimate Everest Trek which is essentially a circuit of the Everest region. The Everest Three Passes Trek is similar to the Ultimate Everest Trek but from Dingboche the trail goes north-east towards Chukhung and then crosses the Kongmala pass to connect to the main Everest Base Camp trek trail at Lobuche.
ACCOMMODATION AND MEALS
The Everest Three Passes Trek is a lodge trek. This means you will sleep and eat meals in local lodges along the trail. The quality of the lodges on this trek are the best among all trekking trails in Nepal. And several lodges on the trail have en suite rooms with hot showers. That said, there are some lodges including the ones in Lobuche and Gorakshep which are still basic. Meals are also quite varied with many options including rice with veggies, noodles, local breads etc. Read our article about food options on Everest treks.
BEST SEASON FOR THE THREE PASSES TREK
The best seasons for the Everest Three Passes Trek are Spring (March-May) and Autumn (October-November). However, unlike other Everest treks, it is NOT recommended to do this trek in Winter months of December, January and February. This is because the trek involves crossing three high Himalayan passes.
TREK RATING
The Everest Three Passes trek is rated “CHALLENGING”. It is rated 5 on a rating scale from 1 (easy) to 5 (challenging). The highest altitude reached is at the summit of Kalapathar (5,545 m/19,195) and the highest overnight elevation is at Gorakshep (5,212m/17,100 feet). At the beginning of the trek, there are two acclimatization days along with several short days to enable proper acclimatization. Trekking the three passes involves average daily hiking of around 6 hours with a few long days of around 8-9 hours. These include the days you hike to the Amadablam Base Camp, the Everest Base Camp and on the pass crossing of the Kongma La, Cho La and the Renjo La. Regardless of the rating, it is important to prepare for any trek in Nepal. Read our advice on training for treks.
PHYSICAL CHALLENGES ON THE THREE PASSES TREK
The Everest Three Passes Trek is the most difficult trek in Nepal that does not involve any technical gear. Yes, the Sherpani Col pass trek from the Makalu region to the Mera region and the Ama Lapcha pass trek from the Mera region to Chukkung are more challenging. However, they also require sleeping in tents, walking on glaciers, using mountaineering gear mainly rappelling gear and walking longer distances. On the contrary, the Everest three passes trek can be done in the relative comfort of a lodge with very few objective dangers.
Of the three passes on this trek, the Khongmala pass is the most difficult.
Chukkung to Khongma La to Lobuche
Distance: 11 kilometers/7 miles
Ascent: 2,948 feet/899 meters
Descent: 2,250 feet/686 meters

Dzongla to Cho La to Thagnag
Distance: 9.35 kilometers/5.8 miles
Ascent: 1,876 feet/572 meters
Descent: 2,351 feet/716 meters

Gokyo to Renjo La to Lungden
Distance: 11 kilometers/7 miles
Ascent: 1,931 feet/588 meters
Descent: 3,397 feet/1,035 meters

It is important to mention that none of these passes are as long as either the Thorung La pass on the Annapurna Circuit Trek or the Larkya La pass on the Manaslu Circuit Trek. But the three passes are at a higher elevation making the Everest Three Passes Trek more physically demanding than other treks in Nepal. The first challenge on this trek is the optional hike to Amadablam Base Camp and back – total mileage of 5.3 miles/8.6 kilometers with elevation gain 2,300 feet/685 meters and the same elevation loss. Another challenge is the day hike to Everest Base Camp and then the ascent of Kalapathar. And, of course, as the name suggests – the three passes.
