Upper Mustang Trek
The Upper Mustang trek visits the kingdom of Mustang at the edge of the Tibetan Plateau. Mustang was an ancient trade route connecting Tibet with Nepal and India. The indigenous people of Mustang are Buddhist and culturally Tibetan. But the king of Mustang decided to ally himself with Nepal. Also, in the 60’s, aided by the CIA the Khampas, a warrior race from Tibet, launched several raids on the Chinese occupation. Hence, for political reasons, travel into Upper Mustang was strictly forbidden. And the region remained isolated from the modern world. In 1992 it was decided to allow outsiders in on a very limited basis. This isolation has helped maintain a way of life almost unchanged for centuries.
The Upper Mustang Trek in not a trek through alpine scenery. Instead, we will be in the great Himalayan rain shadow on a wind-swept desert landscape of implausible gorges, high passes and enormous vistas. We will climb a series of canyons and ridges and discover caves used by monks dating back to the 14th century. The altitude on this route is not extreme by Himalayan standards. And the area is home to snow leopard and blue sheep, lammergeier, yaks, and nomads, ammonites and medieval villages.
THE TREK
This Mustang trek, depending on the weather, begins either with a flight or a drive by jeep to Jomsom. From Jomsom, we drive to Samar where our hike begins. On the first part of our trek, we will use local lodges hiking through Ghemi/Dhakmar, Ghar Gompa and Lo Manthang. From Lo Manthang, we follow the trail west of the Kali Gandaki river back to Jomsom hiking through Samjung, Chusong Gompa, Ghara, Tangge, Pa, Tetang and ending in Muktinath.
ACCOMMODATION AND MEALS
The Upper Mustang Camping Trek is a CAMPING and LODGE combo trek. The quality of the lodges on this trek are comparable to those on the Everest Base Camp Trek. And a majority of the lodges on this route have en suite rooms with hot showers. Furthermore, meals are also quite varied with many options including rice with veggies, noodles, local breads etc. Read our article about food options on lodge treks. Also, do check out our visual blog to see what kind of lodges and meals to expect on the Upper Mustang Trek. Do note, lodges in this region have been upgraded since this blog was written. You can consider upgrades to Royal Mustang Resort in Lo Manthang and Maya’s Heritage Inn in Tsarang.
On the return, from Choser to Muktinath, you will be using tents. We use North Face (VE 25) 4-season tents which are quite spacious and effective against the elements. We also provide sleeping pads. Our staff will carry a small stove and prepare a simple meal of potatoes, spaghetti, noodles (rice noodles available for gluten-intolerant trekkers), eggs and tea/coffee.
BEST SEASON
The best seasons for the Upper Mustang Camping trek are late Spring/Summer (April to July) and Late Summer/Monsoon (September). Because Upper Mustang lies in the rain shadow region, it is possible to trek here during the Summer/Monsoon. But during this time, the flight/drive to Jomsom (the start of the trek) can be affected by bad weather as the regions south of Mustang still experience the monsoons.

WHY TREK WITH US?
- All our Upper Mustang camping treks are private treks for a minimum of two participants for a date of your choosing. Small groups allow us to provide a private, premium and personalized experience.
“Being only two people in the group was a massive advantage we had — it was easier to get helicopters with a smaller group, easier to change where we’d stay on a given day, easier to ask to push further when we felt good, etc. In fact, because of this flexibility, we beat many big groups to EBC, who took many hours longer than us because they had to wait for stragglers, and they ended up missing the views because the clouds had already come in. Basically this helped us get in/out of Lukla more easily, move faster, and adapt the schedule to the changing weather.”Luke L., Chicago IL, USA
