TERILA PASS TREK: NAR TO UPPER MUSTANG

The Teri La pass trek is a wild, challenging and spectacular trek. The trek begins in the Annapurna region near Manang and crosses the Teri La pass (5,545m/18,200ft) to Upper Mustang. The Teri La pass lies north east of the Thorung La pass (on the Annapurna Circuit trail) but is a higher and more challenging pass. Hence, unlike the Annapurna Circuit trek, very few trekkers undertake the Teri La pass trek. Beyond Nar, there are NO permanent human settlements. So all logistics have to be planned accordingly.

A majority of this region lies in the rain-shadow region which means the landscape differs from that of other parts of Nepal. While there are views of some spectacular mountains including Himlung, Kang Guru, Manaslu, Dhaulagiri I and Dhaulagiri II, Nilgiri and Tilicho, the main attraction of this trek is not mountain views. Instead, ancient Buddhist and Bon monasteries, majestic rock and sand-stone formations, strangely shaped canyons, ancient ruins and interesting cave complexes are what makes this trek unique and unforgettable.

THE TREK

The trek begins with a long drive from Kathmandu to Koto (just below Manang on the Annapurna Circuit trail). Continue to hike through the Nar Phu valley and ascend to the Terila pass and cross over to the Upper Mustang region. Once in Upper Mustang, we will trek on a seldom-traveled route through pastures, river canyons, ascending to vast plateaus and through ancient villages to Lo Manthang – the capital of Mustang. We continue to Tsarang on a pass through the high pastures of Lo Manthang to Ghar Gompa – an ancient monastery in Mustang. From Tsarang, we will board a jeep to Jomsom and onward to Pokhara.

WHY TREK WITH US?

  • All our Teri La pass camping treks are private treks for a minimum of two participants for a date of your choosing. Small groups allow us to provide a private, premium and personalized experience. We can also customize this trek to suit your time schedule and preferences.
  • We do NOT nickel-and-dime on services – all inclusions and exclusions are clearly listed in cost details. However, some companies will advertise trips for very low prices but they have a lot of exclusions that is usually not clear. Do read this article “Value offered by Crystal Mountain Treks” to learn more about this. We urge you to compare apples to apples.
  • We have been in business for over 30 years and we employ only the most professional and friendly staff. Additionally, most of our trekkers are either repeat clients or referrals.
  • We are also proud to give back to our community through our giving arm – 3 Summits For Nepal – managed by Crystal Mountain Treks staff.

ACCOMMODATION AND MEALS

The Teri La trek is a CAMPING trek. This means you will sleep in tents and occasionally at local lodges but will eat meals prepared by our kitchen crew. We use North Face (VE 25) 4-season tents which are spacious and very effective against the elements. We also provide sleeping pads (inflatable Exped mats). Meals prepared by our trek crew are quite varied and nutritious including rice with locally available vegetables, spaghetti, dumplings, noodles, local breads etc.

BEST SEASON: TERILA PASS TREK

This trek involves trekking mostly in the rain-shadow region of Nepal. The trek is primarily in the region behind the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs which prevent passage to most of the rain clouds. The best season for the Teri La pass trek is Spring/Summer (late April to early July). Avoid late July and August as some rain do cross over. However, September is also a good time to trek here.

TREK RATING

The Teri La pass trek is rated “CHALLENGING”. It is rated 5 on a rating scale from 1 (easy) to 5 (challenging). The highest highest elevation reached is at the Teri La pass  (5,545m/18,200ft). Besides the high elevation this trek also requires crossing several mountain rivers that are icy cold. And, most importantly, the trek requires walking on narrow trail (mostly scree) with high exposure. If you are scared of heights or don’t have a good sense of balance, this trek is NOT for you. Basically, this trek is not for beginners. Read our advice on training for treks.

Some sections have rock fall danger. And, again, exposure. The faint line in the photo above is the trail.

TERILA TREK VIDEO

Jwalant Gurung, Chief Adventure Officer at Crystal Mountain Treks, along with senior guide, Rajbir Rai, junior guide, Mandip Limbu and a couple other staff headed out on a 25 day scouting trek to Nar Phu, Teri La Pass and Upper Mustang. This video is their account of the Terila trek which involved crossing Terila pass from Nar village to Tangge in Upper Mustang. From Tangge, they continued onward to the seldom-traveled Chusong (Chodzong) and Samjung villages into Lo Manthang. They began trekking in late June which is usually not ideal for viewing mountains. But this video should give our viewers good information on the trail which is our goal.

(Also, check out the video for the first part of their trek – the Nar-Phu trek).

We first continue on a jeep track criss-crossing the river a couple times. Soon enter a small clearing in the forest where there are a couple of lodges. Continue along the banks of the river to arrive another clearing in the forest to Chyap Chyap.

If you prefer, you can continue further all the way to Meta. First arrive at Dharamshala which is reached after walking through a trail etched out from the rocks above which there is a water fall. From Dharamshala it is a steep (1 hour or so) climb to the village of Meta.

Day 7 and Day 8Trek to Nar

About 30 minutes after leaving Nar, make a short descent to a bridge high above the Phu river. This is Nar Phedi.  The trail from Nar Phedi to Nar is a steep ascent of around 4 hours.

The next day is a rest and acclimatization day. You may opt to hike towards the Kangla pass from where there are great views of the mountain range to the east (Manaslu, Himalchuli, Kang Guru). Explore Nar village.

Overnight Lodge. (All meals)

Nar Phedi to Nar village

Distance – 4.90 Kilometers/3.0 miles
Ascent – 581 meters/1,907 feet
Descent – 0

Day 9Trek to Kharka

We leave Nar and head north. First, descend steeply on a switch back. After reaching the plateau, ascend to a suspension bridge. From the bridge make a slow and steep ascent to a big Kharka – yak pasture. This is our camp for the night. There are several smaller pastures a little further where smaller groups can camp.

Overnight Tents. (All meals)

Distance – 5.93 Kilometers/3.68 miles
Ascent – 504 meters/1,653 feet
Descent – 402 meters/1,318 feet

Day 10Trek to river camp

From the pasture camp, continue along the trail high above the river with a few short ascents and descents. Finally cross a landslide and climb a steep section to again descend to the river. The trail is now on the river bed for around 45 minutes which then leads to a wide ground on the river bank.

Overnight Tents. (All meals)

Distance – 8.91 Kilometers/5.54 miles
Ascent – 348 meters/1,141 feet
Descent – 324 meters/1,062 feet

Day 11Trek to base camp

Past the river camp, ascend steeply to skirt a large landslide. Descend to the river, cross a bridge and make a short ascent. In June and July, the villagers of Nar camp here to harvest Yartsa Gompa (Cordyceps), a herb used in oriental medicine. The trail is mostly level with some short ascents and descents. At the river junction, we head West and then prepare for the river crossing (the first of several on this trip). After crossing the icy cold river, climb steeply on scree to a pasture. Soon we reach our base camp which is on the banks of another river.

Overnight Tents. (All meals)

Distance – 11.42 Kilometers/7.10 miles
Ascent – 532 meters/1,745 feet
Descent – 213 meters/700 feet

Day 12Cross Terila pass. Descend to high camp

From base camp begin the slow ascent walking on the river bed – at times hopping on rocks. We soon reach a wide and barren plateau. Past the plateau, begin the ascent to the pass. While the trail is not very steep the thin makes the hike strenuous. Looking back several peaks including Manaslu, Himlung, Gyaji Kang and others are visible. Finally, make a short, steep climb to the pass.

The first section of the descent from the pass is quite tricky. There is NO trail per se; you just make your own trail as you descend. Shoot for marker pole #138. You will then follow these marker poles until the village of Tanggye. There are 4 marker poles in every kilometer of the trail. Descend to high camp on the Mustang side.

Overnight Tents. (All meals)

Ascent – 142 meters/465 feet
Descent – 810 meters/2,660 feet

Day 13Descend to Sherpherd's camp

Today requires a lot of concentration while hiking. Leaving high camp, ascend slowly on the side of a cliff on a scree trail. While the scree isn’t slippery, it is a very narrow and exposed trail. After crossing three such sections (each section is around 2 to 4 minutes), start descending on a switch back. At the bottom of the descent is another river crossing. After crossing the river, continue descending through several pastures. The final descent for the day is on a switchback with scree and rocks (thankfully on a wide trail with NO exposure). Cross another river and then ascend to a shepherd’s camp.

Overnight Tents. (All meals)

Distance – 7.46 Kilometers/4.64 miles
Ascent – 166 meters/545 feet
Descent – 594 meters/1,950 feet

Day 14 and Day 15Trek to Tanggye. Rest day

From shepherd’s camp, ascend gradually for about an hour and then descend to another river.  There is a large sheep pen here which is close to the ruins of a village which was abandoned due to lack of water. From here begin a steep ascent on not very clearly marked trail. It’s best to walk with your guide who can identify the trail. Looking back, Dhaulagiri, Tilicho and Nilgiri are visible further down the Kali Gandaki valley. After slogging for 1 or 2 hours, reach the top of the hill which is another pasture. From here, begin the long descent to Tanggye village. After about an hour into the descent, you will join a jeep track until the village.

A rest day is planned for at Tanggye. This can also be used as a contingency day.

Overnight Lodge. (All meals)

Distance – 18.73 Kilometers/11.64 miles
Ascent – 604 meters/1,981 feet
Descent – 1,533 meters/5,029

Day 16Trek to Yara or Ghara village

From Tanggye village, climb towards the cliffs. Ascend through the gully to reach a large, wide plateau. Climb a little further and then descend to the Dhi river which has several apple orchards. Cross a long suspension bridge and ascend again to another large, wide plateau. Yara village is just after the plateau. Ghara village is about 45 minutes ascent from Yara village.

Overnight Tents. (All meals)

Day 18Hike to Chusong Gompa

From Ghara village, ascend steeply to reach a plateau. Descend to Amka which has several shepherd huts – each belonging to a separate village in the vicinity. Here thousands of sheep wander to the pastures nearby during the day and are again herded back at night. We continue on another plateau until we make a steep descent to the river. You will be crossing this river at least a couple times as you head down stream. Note: It is best to walk in flip-flops as we will not only be crossing the river but will also be wading on the river. At the river junction, we then head upstream on the smaller river. After walking on this river for about half an hour, a trail on the banks becomes visible which we ascend steeply. After continuing for a bit, Chusong Gompa, which is hidden among the cliffs, can be seen. Our camp is on the banks of the river just below the Gompa (Monastery).

Overnight Tents. (All meals)

Distance – 19.5 Kilometers/12.1 miles
Ascent – 859 meters/2,818 feet
Descent – 879 meters/2,883 feet

Day 19Trek to Samjung Village

We continue upstream for around 15 minutes and then begin the arduous, steep 700 meter climb. The trail is not clearly marked. This slog brings us to another large plateau – the largest on the trek. After crossing the plateau, we arrive at a jeep track which does descend to Samjung village. However, we will take another more direct hiking trail. The descent is on scree which is best navigated slowly. Cross the river to reach the abandoned Samjung village with its impressive cave network just above the village. The village has been abandoned because of the lack of water.

Overnight Tents. (All meals)

Distance – 12.6 Kilometers/7.83 miles
Ascent – 790,meters/2,591 feet
Descent – 619 meters/2,030 feet

Today is a full day to explore Lo Manthang. There are several monasteries and other interesting homes/schools to visit inside the walled city.

Overnight Lodge. (All meals)

Day 22Trek to Ghar Gompa. Continue to Tsarang village

Start trekking over the Marang La pass to Ghar Gompa. Enroute we will walk through a large pasture which is now home to the last nomads of Mustang. These nomads, also called Dokpas, lived near Chusong Gompa but moved to the outskirts of Lo Manthang because of the facilities available. Ghar Gompa is the oldest monastery in Nepal dating back to the 8th century. Continue to Tsarang where we will stay at Maya’s Inn.

Overnight Lodge. (All meals)

Day 23Drive through Ghemi to Jomsom

Today we drive around 55 kilometers from Tsarang to Jomsom. We will cross Dhakmar, Ghemi, Giling and Chele enroute. The drive itself should take around 4 hours. However, we will stop enroute to explore the various villages and their monasteries.

While we have the option to fly from Jomsom, the Teri La pass trek is usually scheduled during the monsoon months of May, June, July and September. So we may decide to forego the flight plan and instead decide to drive to Pokhara. If this is the case, we will continue driving to Marpha which is a more interesting village – the center of Thakali culture.

Overnight Lodge. (All meals)

Day 24Fly/Drive to Pokhara

Fly from Jomsom to Pokhara. The day is free in Pokhara. You are free to wander around the lake side for souvenir shopping or to check out the many bars and restaurants. Overnight Temple Tree or similar. (Breakfast and Dinner)

Day 25Fly to Kathmandu

After breakfast, fly to Kathmandu. Full day sightseeing in Kathmandu. Visit Bhaktapur Durbar Square which is around 13 kilometers/8 miles east of Kathmandu. The Bhaktapur Durbar Square was the palace of the kingdom of Bhaktapur and the complex consists of at least four distinct squares (Durbar Square, Taumadhi Square, Dattatreya Square and Pottery Square).

Farewell dinner in Kathmandu. Overnight Hotel Tibet. (Breakfast and Dinner)

Day 26Final departure

Arrive breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight home. (Breakfast)

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

When is the best time to do the Terila pass trek?

This trek involves trekking mostly in the rain-shadow region of Nepal. The trek is primarily in the region behind the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs which prevent passage to most of the rain clouds. The best season for the Teri La pass trek is Spring/Summer (late April to early July). Avoid late July and August as there some rain during these months. However, September is also a good time to trek here.

What kind of food should I expect?

All cooking gear and food have to be carried in from Kathmandu. The cook will purchase fresh fruit and vegetables and rice/lentils from the villagers en route. You will be surprised as to what the cook can make on a small gas stove. In general, expect porridge (Oatmeal), toast, eggs (various style), muesli, hash browns, sausages etc for breakfast. And sandwich, pizzas, momos, noodles (dry and with soup), rolls, fried rice, Indian bread with vegetables or Daal Bhaat (Rice with lentils) etc for lunch and dinner. On most trek days, lunch will usually be a packed lunch (instead of hot lunch) and will consist of energy bars, boiled eggs, chappatis with tuna/peanut butter/jam etc.

Will you provide tents and mats?

Yes, we will provide good quality North Face VE 25 tents for this trek. We will also provide a 2 inch foam mattress and an insulation pad. You can bring an additional pad if you wish. We will also provide all the kitchen gear.

We have lately been providing Exped air mats. Check them out here.

What kind of gear are the porters and staff provided?

This is a challenging trek even for the hardy Nepali staff. Make sure your staff and porters have good gear and enough food to complete this trek. Ask your operator what they provide for the staff. Are they provided meals or are they responsible for their own meals?

We provide snow goggles, mittens, gore-tex parka, water-proof pants and good water-proof hiking boots (earlier we provided Lowa GTX renegade but now source hiking boots locally) to the staff. Also, the staff and porters will be provided all meals on the trek. We’d be glad to provide references who can allude to our claims. All our staff are insured. And we will bear the cost of a helicopter evacuation in case of an emergency.

How fit do I need to be to do the Terila pass trek?

We recommend the Teri La Pass Trek to seasoned hikers only. You must be able to hike up to 12 miles a day (mostly at high altitude). While this trek does not involve and require any technical climbing, you must have the mental and physical toughness to hike on sketchy trail with some objective danger – there are sections with rock fall danger and some sections where you would walk on very narrow trail with high exposure. You will also be crossing streams and small rivers that are icy cold and around knee deep.

We rate the Terila trek a 5 on a scale of 1 (easy) to 5 (challenging).

What are the toilet facilities like? Will I have a chance to shower?

On camping treks, toilets are a hole in the ground in a small tent to allow for privacy. Showers are available during rest days and involve a bucket of hot water. On most days you will clean yourself with wet wipes. We will provide a small bowl of warm water with which you can wipe yourself with a towel.

There will be days where you have the option to stay in local lodges. Some of the lodges will have hot shower.

What gear do I need for the trek? Can I rent/buy gear in Kathmandu?

Layering is key. And it’s always recommended to trek with good branded gear. A good pair of hiking boots that’s been broken in is very important. Good top and bottom base layers, a mid layer (fleece or capilene), and an outer layer (Gore-tex or other material). If you tend to get cold quickly, bring a down parka especially for the evening at the lodge. On most days, you’d be hiking in a convertible hiking pant that can be converted into shorts and one or two top layers.

if you’re trekking with Crystal Mountain Treks, we provide a sleeping bag (rated to 0 degree F or -17 degree C), duffel bags, down jacket and Steripen for water purification to our clients for no charge.

It is possible to buy cheap and relatively functional gear in Kathmandu – convertible pants, down jackets, fleece, Gore-tex jackets. But remember, you get what you pay for. Wool gloves, hats, socks are available too.

There are quite a few branded stores too. North Face, Moutain Hardwear, Marmot and Sherpa. If you’re coming from Australia or Europe, items in these shops are probably cheaper than back home. But if you’re coming from the US, it’s better to buy branded gear at home.
