Astrek wall Climbing, Thamel

Located in the heart of Kathmandu, Thamel is one of the oldest commercial neighborhoods of the city and has been considered to be the center of the tourist industry for many decades. There are a wide variety of things you’ll find here namely, trekking gear shops, souvenir shops, book shops, coffee houses, restaurants and bars.

Here are a few places we recommend:

Mandala Street:

If you’re looking for souvenirs to take home, this is the place to go to. You can find all sorts of goodies such as small Buddha statues, singing bowls, thangkas, pashmina shawls and prayer flags. There are also some great restaurants including a Baskin Robbins ice cream parlour in the same lane where you can get a bite to eat while shopping.

Pilgrim’s Book House:

This book house opened in 1984 and boasts of a wide variety of books about Eastern philosophy, yoga and the healing arts, travel and of course, the Himalayas. They also have a collection of Ayurvedic incense, relaxing massage oils, herbal soaps and cool trinkets for decoration. The staff is also very friendly so if you need help finding something, do not hesitate to ask at the counter.

Sam’s Bar:

Whether you’ve just come back from a grueling trek or are getting ready to go on one, Sam’s bar is a cosy bar to unwind. They have a nice selection of spirits and is known to be reasonably priced. It can get very busy on weekends (after 7pm), however, so make sure you go a little early whether you’re with a group or are alone.

Asian Trekking Wall Climb:

Asian Trekking, or ASTREK, is great for wall climbing. Trained instructors are available if you are a beginner. There is also a bouldering section on the side that you can try out. You can bring your own climbing gear (harness and climbing shoes) or you can rent their equipment. There is also a small restaurant inside with great food and beverages.
