Namaste

Have you ever dreamed of experiencing an ancient culture first hand? Crystal Mountain Treks has been leading Westerners into the remote regions of Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, India and China for the last 20 years. We pride ourselves on getting off of the beaten path in all our treks and journeys and helping our customers experience the culture they came to see. This month, we have two featured treks that will do just that for you – Dolpo and Kanchenjunga.

Dolpo is the most remote and least developed district of Nepal. Isolated from the rest of the country because of rough terrain, Dolpo is home to nearly 6,000 people of Tibetan descent whose lives revolve around Buddhism, a lesser known religion called Bonpo, barley and yaks.

Our other featured trek is to the Kanchenjunga Base Camp in eastern Nepal. This trek will be led by Jenny, my sister, who has lived and worked in the Kanchenjunga region helping set up the local Conservation Area Programme.

Varanasi: The Sacred City of Light

  Varansi

Morning light in Varanasi, India

This November, let us introduce you one of our favorite cities in the world! From the moment you arrive in Varanasi, you can feel that the energy of this city is different. Located along the west bank of the sacred Ganges River, it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Varanasi is in many senses quintessential India. Each year, more than a million Hindu pilgrims from around the world come to wash away their sins in the holy river in the city where "the eternal light of Shiva intersects the earth". We'll rise early to watch the morning sun bring the ancient city to life. We invite you to experience Varanasi and more of the real North India with us this fall. If you book before April 30, receive a $200 American Express Gift Card to help with your pre-trip planning. Please email Pam if you would like more information or to reserve your space.

The Crystal Mountain Signature Trek: Upper Dolpo (35 days, 34 nights)

  Dho Gorge

Dho Gorge, Dolpo, Nepal

At the edge of the Tibetan Plateau lies the legendary "Hidden Land" that is home to the mountain that is our company's namesake, and for years has been off-limits to outsiders. Join us on this 35 day adventure into Dolpo, an unimaginably beautiful, wild, and crystalline landscape. Crossing the Toudje La (18,250 feet) we gain access to a world of rugged people and remote wilderness. Dolpo lies in the great Himalayan rain shadow, geographically cut off from the rest of the world by a barrier of high mountains, deep gorges and thick forests. Our 35-day trek will gain us access to this unique place, which is home to one of the few enclaves of thriving traditional Tibetan culture. Dolpo is no tourist tea-house trek, and you will not find our route outlined in any of the Himalayan trekking guidebooks. It is rugged, unspoiled, and unforgettable - arguably the best trek in all of Nepal. There are a few spaces remaining, so book now to ensure your space. To learn more or to sign up, email Jwalant Gurung.

Rugged Nepal: Trek Kanchenjunga (32 days/31 nights)

  Walanchang Gola

Walanchang Gola, Kanchenjunga, Nepal

In the world of adventure, before there was Everest - there was Kanchenjunga. In fact, until 1856 it was considered the highest mountain in the world - until Mount Everest officially earned that title. Kanchenjunga literally translates to "Five Great Treasures in the Snow" referring to the five peaks within the Kanchenjunga range, each believed to be a repository of different treasures: gold, silver, gems, grains and sacred texts. Trek with us to this stunningly beautiful and sacred mountain region within the eastern Himalayas in a journey through spectacular and culturally fascinating landscapes. You will trek with Jenny Gurung, a devoted fan of the eastern Himalayas, and her team. Jenny lived and worked for four years in the region as a member of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) team that established the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project. A conservation academic, she works in operations at Crystal Mountain Treks. To learn more or to sign up, email Jenny.

It's official! We've begun operations in the US as Grand Asian Journeys. For 20+ years, we've brought thousands of westerners to Asia as Crystal Mountain Treks operating out of Nepal. Our customers have been asking for a stateside presence to make the business part of our tour process easier and more accessible. In April, we will be launching our new company and new website. Same great team and experience, new local service!

Visit Nepal!

2011 has been declared Nepal Tourism Year by the Nepal government with a target of attracting one million tourists. Every political party, (all 19 of them!), have signed a pledge to do all they can to make your trip to Nepal easy, safe, affordable and memorable. Let us help you plan your journey!

CMT Gives Back

In the Dolpo region the lack of healthcare is a serious concern, with the closest medical clinic more than 6 days away by foot. Crystal Mountain Treks has donated $1,000 to support construction of the Tsaga Clinic in order to serve these people that are so in need. We are proud to give back to the regions where we operate, and support basic human services like schools and medical clinics.
